Common Ultrasound FAQs

Did You Know?

An ultrasound is the best way to confirm if a pregnancy is progressing normally. Studies show that up to 25% of pregnancies may not continue, and sometimes miscarriages happen without obvious signs.1 An ultrasound can help detect this early. If a miscarriage is found, it’s important to get medical follow-up care to ensure your health and safety.

  • Because there’s a high demand for free ultrasounds in Somerset, we ask clients to confirm their need with a positive pregnancy test first. We provide free pregnancy tests and can often schedule your ultrasound for the same day, making it quick and convenient for you to get the care and information you need.

  • If you’re thinking about abortion, your first step is a pre-termination appointment to get an ultrasound. This ultrasound will help answer two important questions:

    1. Is your pregnancy progressing? This determines which abortion method you might be eligible for. The type of procedure and cost depends on your health history and how far along you are.

    2. Is your pregnancy viable? An ultrasound is the only way to know for sure if your pregnancy is progressing normally. Studies show that up to 1 in 4 pregnancies may not continue, and some women don’t realize they’ve had a miscarriage until it’s seen on an ultrasound. If a miscarriage is detected, you’ll need follow-up care from a doctor.

Getting this information is a key part of making an informed decision about your next steps.

  • Limited Ultrasounds at First Choice Often DO:2
    - Detect a fetal heartbeat
    - Estimate your due date
    - Check if there’s more than one baby
    - Recommend going to the emergency room if there’s a serious concern

Limited Ultrasounds at First Choice do NOT:
    - Tell you the baby’s gender
    - Diagnose any problems with the baby’s development
    - Replace regular prenatal care with a doctor

These ultrasounds are meant to give you basic information about your pregnancy, but they’re not a substitute for full medical care.

  • We provide free ultrasounds to help you find out if your pregnancy is progressing and to check how far along you are. As a nonprofit organization, we’re funded by the community, so we don’t make money from your ultrasound or your pregnancy decision. Since our services are free, nothing will show up on your insurance or be billed to you.

Your ultrasound details are kept completely private. We’re here to offer support and help you explore your options in a safe, judgment-free environment.

If you’re having symptoms like bleeding, spotting, or cramping, get medical help right away. These could be signs of a miscarriage, and you may need follow-up care from a doctor.
